The Red and White Ball raises funds to benefit vital cord blood research. In 10 years, the Texas Cord Blood Bank has been collecting cord blood from the placenta following healthy live births. In the past, this disposed blood was considered a medical waste. Now cord blood, rich in blood-making cells, can be used to treat patients with certain cancers and fatal blood disorders, as an alternative to bone marrow transplantation for life-threatening leukemia and other blood and immune disorders.
