San Fernando Cathedral Annual Enrique Barrera Blood Drive

San Antonio, TX- The San Fernando Cathedral will host its second annual blood drive in memory of Deacon and former City Councilman Enrique M. Barrera. The drive will be held Sunday, September 27th from 9am to 2pm in the Elizondo plaza (between the Municipal Plaza Building & San Fernando Cathedral.) Barrera served as an ordained deacon at San Fernando Cathedral and on City Council for five years as a representative of District 6.

“My husband was always involved in the community giving back,” said Leticia Barrera. Barrera encourages the community to come out and donate blood. “It’s a blessing when people give blood, it saves lives and who knows when one of our children is going to need it.”

Enrique Barrera died in 2007 after a prolonged bout with cancer. According to Leticia, when Enrique was in the hospital he received blood and hosting this annual blood drive is a way to continue his giving to the community.

Donors must present identification. It is recommended to eat and drink before and after donating. Anyone 16 years old weighing 120 pounds (with a parental consent form), or at least 17 years old weighing 110 pounds, and in good general health can donate blood. You can learn more about blood, platelet, tissue, cord blood and marrow donation, or print a parental consent form at www.southtexasblood.org
