A Mother's Story
"As a labor and delivery nurse at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston, Stephanie had heard of banking umbilical cord blood. Her patients often came to her seeking inform She supported the idea of helping save lives quickly and painlessly through material that would otherwise be thrown away. “It takes longer to walk downstairs and get a soda from the vending machine than it takes to collect cord blood and save a life,” she says. When it came time for her to make the decision as a mother, she didn’t hesitate. “I thought: why not help someone else? If we ever needed it, we could turn to the registry and they would help us.” In December of 2008 her daughter Vivianna was born and Stephanie eagerly donated her cord blood. When her daughter is old enough to understand, Stephanie will share the donation experience with her. “I saved the first brochure I ever got on cord blood donation and the picture of Leslie and us at the hospital. I put it in her scrapbook so that she’ll know that even as an infant she was doing great things”.
