Tissue Services Department Scholarship Guidelines

Every day, thousands of people are searching for an organ, tissue or cornea donor. There is a nationwide shortage of these types of donors and it directly impacts your community. Write and submit an essay in 500 words on the topic below and you could win a $500 scholarship! Contest rules and guidelines are below.
                       

Topic:

How would you convince someone to register to be an organ, tissue and cornea donor? What would you say to him or her? What would you do to show that person how important it is to register?

Eligibility
All entrants must be an enrolled senior in the 2009 – 2010 school year in a high school within the following counties:

  • Bexar
  • Hidalgo
  • Nueces
  • Cameron
  • Willacy

All entrants must print and attach a student application form from the Tissue Program page at www.southtexasblood.org. Entrants must also attach a copy of their college acceptance letter. All essays must be submitted in English and only one essay submission per person. All essays must be in house or postmarked no later than April 30, 2010. Essays submitted via e-mail or other channels will not be accepted. All essays submitted after the deadline will be considered late and will not be accepted.

Essay Content
We are looking for an essay that contains factual, personal and emotional appeal. All essays will be judged on four components:
• Accuracy of Facts – 25 pts             • Grammar – 10 pts
• Creativity – 50 pts                          • Relevance to Topic – 15 pts
